Skin concerns and virtual care in Alberta: when a video visit helps and when to be seen in person
Rashes, acne, eczema and other skin concerns are common reasons for a virtual visit. Learn what a physician can assess on video, how to show the skin clearly, and the signs that need in-person care.

What can be assessed on video
Many skin concerns can be assessed visually: acne, eczema flare-ups, contact rashes, mild infections, hives and follow-ups on a treatment already started. The physician asks about how long it has been there, what makes it better or worse, itching, pain, fever and any new products or medications. Good lighting and a steady camera make the difference between a useful visit and a second appointment.
How to show your skin clearly
Sit near a window or a bright lamp, avoid backlight and use the rear camera of your phone if it is sharper. Clean the area, remove make-up or creams, and be ready to show the area from close up and from further away so the physician sees its size and spread. If the clinic offers secure photo upload through Medeo, use that channel rather than email.
When you should be seen in person
A mole that changes shape, colour or size, a wound that is not healing, a rash with fever or feeling very unwell, rapidly spreading redness, severe pain, or a rash that follows a new medication all need in-person assessment, sometimes urgently. Sudden swelling of the lips or face, or trouble breathing, is an emergency: call 911.
Treatment and follow-up
When appropriate, the physician can prescribe topical or oral treatment, suggest over-the-counter options and explain when to expect improvement. Some concerns need a referral to dermatology; the physician decides based on the assessment. Referrals and prescriptions are never guaranteed before the visit.

Often, when the rash is visible clearly on video and the history is typical. Some rashes need an in-person examination or tests.
Can I send photos before the visit?
Use only the secure channel the clinic indicates in Medeo. Do not send photos by email or through the website.
Is a virtual skin visit covered by Alberta Health?
A medically necessary assessment is insured for eligible Alberta residents. Cosmetic requests are not insured.
