Common reasons for a virtual visit

Starting or renewing contraception, questions about the pill, patch or ring, uncomplicated urinary tract infection symptoms, period irregularities, menopause symptoms, breastfeeding questions and follow-ups after a treatment are frequently managed through virtual care. The physician takes a full history and decides whether a prescription, a test or an in-person examination is the right next step.

What needs an in-person examination

Pap tests, pelvic examinations, prenatal care, breast lumps, heavy bleeding, severe pelvic pain or pregnancy-related concerns such as bleeding or reduced fetal movement need to be assessed in person. Some of these are urgent. Sudden severe abdominal pain, fainting or heavy bleeding in pregnancy are emergencies: call 911 or go to the nearest emergency department.

Privacy and comfort

Choose a private place for the visit and use headphones if others are nearby. You can say at the start what you would prefer not to discuss on video. Everything discussed is part of your confidential medical record at Medicine Place, protected under Alberta’s Health Information Act.

Preparing for the visit

Note the date of your last period, the medications and contraception you use, any allergies and the questions you want answered. Keep your health card and photo ID nearby. Medically necessary visits are insured for eligible Alberta residents; a private fee applies only without valid coverage.
